Marker making
Marker making: pieces nested on your fabric width
We lay every piece of every size on the width of your fabric, as tightly as the grain allows, so the cutting room uses less cloth.
Price on request
Fabric is usually the largest cost in a garment. A marker decides how much of it ends up on the cutting room floor, so a few centimetres saved on each lay add up across a production run.
We nest the pieces on your exact fabric width, keeping the grain line, the nap and any pattern repeat in the right direction, and mix sizes in the ratio you are cutting.
Tell us the fabric width and how many of each size you are making, and we'll send you the marker ready to plot.
What to send us
- The graded pattern, as files (or we digitise and grade it first)
- The usable fabric width
- How many garments of each size you are cutting
- Whether the fabric has a nap, a stripe or a print that must run one way
Send it on WhatsApp or by email. Samples and paper patterns come by courier: we work with clients across the UK.
What you get back
- A marker nested on your fabric width
- The marker length, so you can order the right amount of fabric
- A file ready to plot for the cutting room
Questions about marker making
Can you tell me how much fabric to order?
Yes. The marker length tells you how much fabric each lay needs, which helps you order the right amount.
Do you need the graded pattern first?
Yes, the marker is made from the graded pieces. If you only have a base size, we can grade it first.
Can you work with a striped or printed fabric?
Yes. Tell us the repeat and we place the pieces so the stripes or print line up.
